About AFSCME Council 71
 
Who We Are
 
AFSCME Council 71 was chartered by the International Union in 1971.  It is charged with the responsibility of representing over 70 bargaining units.  Council 71 has over 8,000 members in the following New Jersey Counties; Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May.
   
The service staff headed by Mattie Harrell, Executive Director, provides day to day assistance and advice to local leadership in the Williamstown Office and at local sites.  Services provided include the filing and processing of grievances and arbitrations and a major role in contract negotiations.  Significant staff time is also spent seeking out and organizing unaffiliated public employees seeking the protection and support of a national labor union.
 

Under the direction of Executive Director, Mattie Harrell the Southern New Jersey District Council 71 is Charted by the American Federation of State, Couty and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO on December 1, 1971. The Charter was signed by International President Jerry Wurf and International Secretary-Treasurer William Lucy.

Beyond its service function the Council leadership strives to play a major role in the political life of the communities it represents.  Council 71 has long provided its strong support to candidates of every level that share our vision of fairness for working men and women.

Now in its 39 year Council 71 will continue to be in the forefront of the struggle for dignity in the workplace for working people in the State of New Jersey.
